First Impressions

First impressions matter, and in this home, the dining room is the very first space guests see when they walk through the front door. We knew this room needed to make a statement, one that felt sophisticated, welcoming, and memorable from the moment you enter.

Rather than starting from scratch, we focused on enhancing the room's existing character. The original light fixture was a perfect fit for the space, so it remained as a key design element. By preserving select pieces and updating the surrounding finishes, we were able to create a fresh look while honoring the home's original charm.

One of the most dramatic changes was painting both the built-in cabinets and ceiling in Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal. Extending the color onto the ceiling creates a rich, enveloping effect that instantly adds depth and drama. The cabinetry becomes a focal point, while the dark ceiling gives the room a polished, custom feel.

To complement the cabinetry, we added wallpaper that creates a seamless connection between the dining room and the adjacent study. The pattern introduces texture and visual interest while helping the spaces feel cohesive rather than disconnected. Artwork became another important design feature. Carefully selected pieces pull from the colors found within the area rug, reinforcing the palette throughout the room and creating a sense of harmony. To give the artwork the attention it deserved, we installed an art light above the piece, highlighting it as a focal point and adding warmth and ambiance to the space.

One of the most impactful architectural changes was removing the swinging door leading to the kitchen. While seemingly simple, this adjustment opened the room significantly, improving sightlines and creating a more natural flow between the spaces. The dining room now feels larger, brighter, and more connected to the rest of the home.

The result is a dining room that delivers exactly what the homeowners envisioned, a space that packs a punch from the moment you walk through the door. Rich color, thoughtful details, and strategic updates transformed the room into a dramatic yet inviting introduction to the home.
