A Reflection

A project as big as the doctor's office we featured a few weeks ago, needed all hands on deck to put on the finishing touches. We had someone hauling away the old furniture and taking it to various charities, another checking for places where the paint needed to be touched up before the big reveal Monday, and two assistants hanging hallway and patient room artwork.

As one of those assistants, (Hello world!) I wanted to reflect on what it was like to work on this big project!

The first thing is that choosing placement of artwork is not just haphazardly placing pieces around and thinking "yep this works here." Walking the space and getting a feel of the flow helps with the decision making of what will work where. Even from there, changes may have to be made because of unforeseen issues, like a fire alarm. After you think you have it all perfectly placed, take another walk because it is much easier to swap placement before they are hung on the wall.

Now to the fun part, actually hanging the pieces! The other assistant and I had it down to a science after our first few patient rooms. Each piece of artwork was hung on the back wall, so it could be seen from the hallway if the door was open. Our process was simple:

  • Measure the wall and mark the middle with tape

  • Measure the piece of artwork and mark the middle with tape

  • Align the piece with the middle of the wall and have the top align with the top of the cabinet

  • Mark the location of the hook on the back of the piece so it sits in the correct spot on the wall

  • Measure the distance between the hooks and make the 2nd hook placement on the wall

  • Attach anchors to the wall to hang the piece

  • Check and make sure it is level

  • Maybe adjust the anchors? (Not every piece was easy to hang)

  • Admire your work!

This may seem like a lot but we breezed through the patient rooms like a dynamic picture hanging duo! We had a blast working on this project and I can now say I can hang my artwork the right way, in my own home! Hope you enjoyed this little BTS!
